Does AI make us more productive or lazier?

After months of integrating AI into my workflow as a Software Architect, I’ve been asking myself an uncomfortable question: Is it making me more productive, or is it making me "dull"?

The reality is that as architects, we know exactly what we want and where we want it. AI simply accelerates the construction process we would carry out ourselves if we had infinite time. However, there’s a trap: blind trust.

With daily use, you start to trust the agent so much that you stop reviewing the code with a magnifying glass. But I’ve discovered that the key isn’t letting the AI do the thinking—it’s forcing myself to think better.

I see it like building a house:

  • I don’t dig the foundation holes by hand; I tell a machine exactly where, how, and how many holes the structure needs.

  • I don’t forge the support beams; I instruct the machine to create them with the exact specifications that my experience dictates.

Is AI a double-edged sword? At first, I worried that delegating so much code would make me lose my edge. Today, after 26 years in the industry, my perspective has shifted.

I’ve moved from "coding" to "directing the execution."

When I use AI, I force myself to structure the problem much more deeply. If I can't explain to the machine what I need, it’s because I don’t fully understand the problem myself.

My experience as an architect is what gives value to the AI. Without an architect who knows where the reinforcements go, the machine will just dig random holes in the ground.

AI is the muscle; our experience remains the brain.

The Bottom Line: AI won’t replace us, but it will redefine our role. We are no longer the ones "laying the bricks"; we are the ones ensuring the structure is unbreakable. Real productivity happens when we use AI with intent, not by inertia.

Does anyone else feel like they’re reviewing AI-generated code less than they should? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
